When you are going on holiday, look round your house and think like an intruder. Look for areas where your property is vulnerable, such as shrubs and trees which may provide cover for an intruder to hide, cut them back where possible. Make sure you have outside sensor lights, and put lights and radio’s on timers inside your property to give the impression of an occupied premises.
Make sure sheds and garages are secured, some people have items that thieves can easily sell stored in garages and sheds, and they are an easy target.
Don’t leave spare keys in obvious places, and when you buy a new appliance try and dispose of the packaging so that you are not advertising to a potential intruder that you have something worth stealing. Tear up the packaging and put some each week in your recycling bin if you cannot get it all in at once.
Tell your trusted neighbours that you are going away and advise them if any family member is collecting the post or watering the plants and make sure you cancel any newspapers.
Check that all your after hours contacts are up to date, and finally, make sure you have a relaxing time on holiday.
